How to Make Low Flow Measurements Using Turbine Flow Meters

A blue website divider

Accurate low flow measurement is challenging in many applications. The low dynamic energy associated with flow rates down to 0.001 GPM exceeds the capabilities of most mechanical flow meters and typically forces the use of less accurate flow meter technologies.

In the aerospace market, turbine flow meters are commonly used in flow measurement applications because of their high accuracy, reliability, and compatibility with most aerospace fluids. A few typical low flow aerospace applications include:

  • Small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fuel consumption
  • Satellite thruster fuel consumption
  • Fuel, chemical, or water injection

This white paper explains how Flow Technology’s Omniflo Turbine Flow Meter and its tangential design are used in low flow measurement applications like those in aerospace. In the tangential design, the rotor is perpendicular to the flow energy and an orifice directs the flow to the perpendicular rotor blades, causing the rotor to spin in proportion to the volumetric flow. Liquid and gas minimum flows down to 0.001 GPM can be accurately measured using this design.
